Why Millennials Are Flocking to Old Fashioned Matchmakers

Millennials. For a generation that grew up on cell phones, video games, and apps, the last thing you’d expect is for them to call an old fashioned matchmaker to find love. With over 1,500 dating apps on the market and over 20% of adults ages 25-35 online, it would appear options for singles are endless. So why are matchmakers at LunchDates receiving so many inquiries from singles in this age group?

My clients in their twenties and thirties all have different relationship goals. Some want to find a great boyfriend or girlfriend, while others want to explore different types of personalities to see who the best fit is. Still others are ready for a LTR that will lead to marriage.

As matchmakers, we’re always in high demand. However, the recent uptick in Millennials had me wondering why so many, who grew up in the era of technology, were leaving their phones behind to work with a professional offline? Why not stick with swiping? Here are some of the most common answers I have received after speaking with hundreds of single Millennials in the Boston area:

  • Online dating breeds bad behavior. Who needs it?
  • Too many first dates from non-committal people. Even twenty-something’s don’t want to waste their time.
  • They want to see results! Millennials have a low tolerance for activities that don’t create some level of immediate satisfaction.
  • They’re focused on building their careers. They don’t want a second job looking for love.
  • The dating pool they want to pull from is very selective, and highly competitive. They have high expectations of the type of partner they want.
  • They like working with a professional. Reality TV has helped take away the taboo of working with a matchmaker. In fact, they think it’s pretty cool.

There are so many dating sites targeted to young professionals. Every day a new dating app pops up promising they’re different because it’s for people who “want” relationships. I’m under the opinion that the way to fix the challenges of online dating is not more of online dating and I believe that my Millennial counterparts would agree (at least the ones who want to meet a quality person).

It may seem like an old fashioned notion to use a matchmaker to find love. The last person you’d think would be calling me would be a thirty-something guy or a girl in her twenties, but that’s exactly what’s happened. They’re open, honest, smart, professional, and truly outstanding people. They also understand that investing in a professional to find them an exceptional partner is a smart, strategic move in the dating scene these days. In fact, those singles working with a matchmaker in the age of online dating have an innate dating advantage. They have an insider working the dating game all day, every day, just for them. And they want to win. The prize? Possibly the right person who they’ll spend the rest of their lives with. Every stage of life when you’re single can be challenging. Many of the reasons my Millennials have shared with me on why they work with a matchmaker are the same ones I hear from my fifty year old clients.

The search to find love is timeless and transcends every generation. A matchmaker has a very special understanding of that. We know what you want and we search out to the ends of the earth to find you that person. Youth escapes us all, but love, with the right person, will last for eternity. Call me.
