In order to make sure that your efforts in the New Year aren’t in vain, check out our top 3 dating secrets to get you where you want to go in 2019. Whether it’s getting back out there after a long break, letting go of a past relationship, or taking the ultimate plunge into marriage, you deserve to know how you can achieve relationship success.
How many more of these conversations do you want to have?
1. Online dating is not the best way to get into a relationship.
Dating Sunday, the first Sunday immediately following New Year’s Day, is the Super Bowl for singles. Dating sites see the highest peak in usage of profiles in January. Millions of users are once again excited at the thought of a fresh start to meet someone great. And this multi-billion dollar industry provides us plenty of options to put ourselves out there. Then again, more singles means more competition. Plus, there are fake profiles, fair weather daters, and serial daters to deal with.
So does this online dating thing really work? Spend some time online or watching the news this month and you’d be convinced that online dating is a sure win for your dating life. Not so fast. Most of the dating “stats” that tout the success of online profiles are conducted by the very dating sites that entice you to join them.
The reality is, there aren’t a ton of third-party studies on the success rate of online dating, but Pew Research Center’s study found only 23% of long-term relationships are from dating sites. Why is this important to point out? Because it helps you understand the odds before you invest time and energy into one specific dating channel. So where can you turn when looking for a quality partner for a long-term relationship? So where to turn when looking for a quality partner for a long-term relationship? Offline.
2. Your best chance of dating success is through another person.
88%. That’s the percentage of couples who said they met their significant others outside of a dating app, according to this recent study. Whether it’s at the office, through meetups, friends, or family, long-term relationship research points to direct human interaction and intervention as being much more efficient ways to attract long-time companions than dating apps or online communication. Don’t believe the hype that your match is one swipe away! It’s not bad to put yourself out there on dating apps, but you need a dating strategy that is going to set you up for success in the New Year. The first step is realizing what doesn’t work.
Dating apps give us a false sense of security that we’re covering all our bases. More apps means a bigger dating pool to choose from, and more is better. Right? No – unless having more first dates is part of your overall plan for finding a mate. In reality, more apps doesn’t mean more second or third dates.
It’s all about networking.
But what if you’ve recently relocated, are painfully introverted, or wouldn’t date anyone your parents would set you up with? Branching out into other networks is key, whether it’s through volunteerism, running clubs, or after-hour socials. And there is always the option of hiring a professional matchmaker to do the heavy lifting for you. One of the reasons why so many people end up in relationships through matchmakers is because of the human touch, which is one thing that no amount of algorithms on a swiping app can duplicate.
3. Know your strengths and weakness in your dating pool.
Newsflash! You’re your own worst enemy. And you’re not the only single person out there looking for a mate. That is both a blessing and a curse. More choices mean just that, more choices. In an age of instant gratification and phone-obsessed swiping, what’s the best way to get noticed by the person you actually want to meet? Professional help, my friend.
